This web page is for people who were stationed at Kwajalein Atoll, part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.  Please contact me if you would like to leave a memory, story or would like to update everyone on what you are up to now.  Make yourself some fresh ground coffee and look over the list to see if one of your old military buddies or islander friends have posted!  It is a very extensive list covering the 1950s all the way up to present day.  Grab a snack and relieve the memories of being at Kwaj!  All names are listed alphabetically by last name and the directory is broken up over two pages.

1971-77 Nicolls, Allison  Kwaj kid. You might remember my sisters and I as the "Nicolls" Triplets, our father as Dr. Nicolls, our mother as Gail the scuba diver and mother of the triplets!  My mother rode around on this ridiculous bike that carried all three of us until we could ride by ourselves. We used to jog with our parents (age 4 and up). I was young, but I do recall a number of friends. If you remember my sisters and I or my folks feel free to drop a line at ali.nicolls@gmail.com.

I lived at the very end of Silver City at trailer 832.  We had a really nice place.  Dad and Ray Burke added a large addition on to the trailer, a living room, master bedroom and one more bedroom.  So we had a lot of room but still only ONE bathroom!  We also had a really nice yard that mom made into a jungle  paradise.  She had orchids growing everywhere.  My favorite memories are of coming out my front door everyday and having the lagoon right in front of me.  The beautiful sun rises and the storms that would throw sea water onto our living room windows.  Swimming in the water right in front of our house...and the sand bar ... that the Lucero's and us claimed as ours!  The friends I made...and the memories of those friends who have since passed away.

1974-96 Oakley, Jim    Kansas City, KS, eileenjim1@aol.com. What an interesting period in ones life when you spend a couple of decades of it on a small island in the Pacific. That's what I did from September 1974 thru mid February of 1996 except for a little hiatus in May-Oct '88 to golf in Europe.  Anyway, things started with me at the Kwajalein Hospital as a Medical Tech and Pharmacy until I joined Quality Assurance in '84.  I moved on when the Aviation Supply Coordinator for Spares came along in '90 and there I stayed until retirement. Hard to realize that your big worries were if your bike was going to be there when you left the club or clubs. That was mine anyway and I wasn't to disappointed if it was gone as I couldn't ride it anyway. That was proven to me several times during my two decades.  As I look back on that time I can see why people get the Kwajalein Connection as you don't forget the island whether you do one tour or twenty.  I'm sure things have changed a lot since '96 as they did during those two decades but that's the good part with no time to get bored.  I'm currently enjoying retirement with a good boss, incentive raises, promotions and one trying problem, trying to rise before 10 a.m.  I find I have a green thumb which I thought was something you got when you let a cut go too long.  Anyway, we have a great looking yard, flowers galore, and not too far from the American Legion with a great "Happy Hour".  I'm still looking forward to getting my drivers license one of these days's but I keep remembering the bike.

We also had a full mobile studio that was hired by 20th Century Fox to do numerous promotional interview sessions for various movies. I was the manager and TD on those, working with William Holden, Gene Wilder, Dom Delouis, Jill Claighberg, Paul Mazertski, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and others.  After tiring of the television production environment, I wound up as the Senior Field Engineer and Marketing Support Engineer for the premier US cryptographic company -- one of the top 3 companies in the world. I spent 7 years running about the world (39 countries on 5 continents) as one of four persons allowed to discuss the inner workings of the key generator with national government cipher committees.  I joined Texas Instruments in 2004, after spending 12 years as an independent contractor. I now manage exports and logistics for a 1000+ person group, and design and audit business processes.  My wife of 10 years (Judy) and I spend a lot of time with our grandkids. Skype has proven to be a wonderful tool to keep up with fast-growing kids spread around the country.  I would love to take her to visit Kwaj. I still remember wonderful friends and great parties.
1965-73 Rasmussen, Sandie (Hirst)  1140 Monaco Court, Grover Beach, CA 93433, (805) 474-6950.  I was on Kwajalein from 1965-73 and am in the Class of 1975. Some of you might remember my mom Marjorie Hirst who was the "Storybook Lady" for 7 years. I also had a brother Glen Hirst who passed away in 1998. My dad Daniel Hirst worked for the Corps of Engineers and sadly we lost him in 1997.  I have many fond memories of Kwajalein and revisited in 1983 for 2 weeks. What a blast that was!! My email address is Kwajsandie@aol.com

I sure do miss Kwaj and all the great friends and the islands offerings/sights. Would love to find a way back there to work until retiring. I'm now the Technical Operations Manager for the corporate Web site of Electronic Data Systems www.eds.com in Dallas/Plano, TX. I am divorced with no kids, which is a missed blessing. However, my girlfriend has a 3 year old daughter who I love to death.

Reed, Jim Santa Rosa, California, jrflies@aol.com.  We were at Kwajalein on our first tour as Aviation Manager and the second tour as Marine Manager. The friends we made and the adventures we had at Kwajalein during those two tours were really special and I felt it a privilege to have served on that small Pacific Island. During our first tour we had "Landfall," a 40' sailboat that I sailed from Kwajalein to Japan with three friends, Wes Westhafer, Leo Nolan and Al Whitcomb when we left Kwaj on our first tour. I would like to hear from any one who knew me or would just like to chat about Kwaj.

1952-53 Reinhardt, Joe email. I was stationed on Kwaj during 1952 & 53. I was an electrician (CE2) working in the telephone group for Public Works Dept. I started in the manual exchange and assisted the civil service guys from Hawaii convert the island telephone system over to an automatic dial system and worked in all phases of telephone work and settled in as the switching system maintenance guy. After Chief Bembry left in mid 53, myself and another CE2 (Al Goller from Zanesville, Ohio) ran the dial system maintenance group. Gained great experience as I worked for new York telephone after I got out (35 years). Looking at sites of Kwaj today, I can’t believe the change. No longer a naval station. Would like to hear from anyone who was there during my hitch. Got there in 1952 on the Morton and left on the Anderson with a total stay time of 367 days. Looking back, great experience.

Chuck enjoyed his fleet of boats over the years, and the world class fishing. He became a master "pepper farmer" while his boats were in dry dock. The best part of living on "Almost Paradise" was the friendships we formed which will last forever. We retired to our home in Satellite Beach, FL for a year and then relocated to TN. Thanks for the music Shermie!
1965-66 Roberts, Michael 1090 W. Dragoon Springs Pl., Tucson, AZ 85737 (520) 297-9618, mrob832662@aol.com. My younger sisters Jetta Lynn and Beverly as well as my younger bother Stan each were able to share the unique wonderful experience of island life and school in Kwajalein. I am the resident investigator In charge of the Tucson office of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration with that magical retirement number of over 30 years of service. My last years though have shifted focus and have me on the road a bit more since becoming the Chapter President of the Union representing not only the bargaining unit employees of FDA but also four other Federal Agencies for the West Coast, Southwest and Central Regions. This is my final location before retirement after working in Berkeley, CA: San Francisco, CA and El Paso, TX.  I have three children - Chris 28, Cassie 22 and Sean 18 who each have contributed in their own unique way to extending my retirement date :-) :-). In looking back, the "Rock" really did rock.
1965-68 Roberts, Doug  Sacramento, CA, robfamily@surewest.net.  My Mom, Dad and I lived were on Kwaj for about 3 years.  Dad ( Bill Roberts) and Mom (Ginny Roberts) lived in one of the concrete block homes along Ocean Drive?  He worked for Global Associates with George Epsom, Glen Elkins, Click Nelson, Art Kadis, Gene Cohan and a number of others.  I was in kindergarten through first grade.  I have very fond memories of Kwaj. Played golf with dad, swam in the ocean, caught lots of fish, learned to swim in the big pool filled with sea water. I remember when they launched a test rocket and all the people who lived in trailers would go to more substantial homes in case debris came off the rockets during launch.  We would run out to the beach behind our house and watch the rocket trail across the sky eventually being retrieved by a Navy ship.  We used to fish by the dump since there was open dumping into the water and all the garbage attracted lots of fish.  Storm parties were fun for mom and dad even though it could have been really dangerous if any had come on shore with high tides.  We used to play all day and come home when the big horn sounded around 6 p.m.  Things were different then and we were allowed to explore and learn back then.  I remember coming home with a whole bunch of baby sharks in my bike basket but I can't remember where I found or caught them.  A funny story was when others were planning a birthday party for my mom or dad. George Epsom, then head of security, was going to be away but promised to show up from the mainland somehow.  On the night of the party he flew in without anyone knowing he was back.  That night he got dressed in his suit with briefcase and went down to the lagoon at the beach club.  When the party really got going he slipped into the water, swam over by partners and came trudging out telling everyone that he promised to make it even if he had to swim!  I imagine that he had a pretty good time the rest of the night.  I know that my Mom still talks about that night.  My Dad Bill passed away in October 2003. Mom is doing well and living in Stockton, CA.  I am sure that she would love to hear from anyone who was around in those days. My email is robfamily@surewest.net and will be happy to forward notes to her.  Kwaj was a lot of fun especially for a little kid.  I will always remember our time there.  I only wish that my kids could have spent some time there.  My parents best friends were all there then and it was one of the most special times in their lives.

1969-74 Schafer, Roger A.  Kwaj, Kentron, raschafer@aol.com. I was on Carlos from September 69 - March 71.  Remember Bill Patton, Cary Bedford, Jack McCreary, John Barsic, Bob Horn, Emery Kingery well, very well. And who could forget Stanley the Cook. Carl who was Stanley's Assistant came to Gugeegue when Ernie Muster of Global came over to Gugeegue from Carlos in 71. We had a wonderful group on Gugeegue. A McHale's Navy of sorts. Smaller Island and smaller headcount than Carlos.  Those were good times for sure. Saw Jack McCreary in Dallas probably in 1978 when he and Art Kowalkowski were back there helping on a Proposal.  I did 3 tours with Kentron. 69 - 74 on Kwaj. Then 75 - 77 on Wake and then 78 - 81 in Dallas. Each of those runs were good and special. That was a good era of course with lots going on and jobs for all. My life has been storied of sorts. Many years in Saudi Arabia, recently several in Iraq. Now taking it easy on my Farm in Pennsylvania. Working on a personal web site.

1969-70 Taylor, John  jtisit2000@yahoo.com  Hi, and a special hi to all the people who lived and worked and played on Kwaj. I was there as a corpsman in the hospital, enjoying 'normal' life after a seemingly long long tour of duty in Viet Nam. Was very happy to find the warm, breezy paradise called Kwajalein; I can still feel the wood against my back at the Richardson Theater and the soft, warm rain on my face as MASH danced across that huge screen where no one seemed to mind it was raining cats and dogs. How wonderful and peaceful it was to be there, surrounded by a multicolor of skins and greater multicolor of umbrellas. O Kwaj, I still miss you!  Can you hear my song to you, O Kwajalein, Sweet Kwajalein!  My best to you, Shermie. Thanks!  And a special hello to everyone who visited the hospital during my stay there and who can remember that gorgeous tall blonde male wonder called John! Ha! That was me! Oh, and in case anyone knows where the Hill family is, please let me know. I remember treating their beautiful daughter and often seeing her out and about. I would love to send her a greeting. She was/is 6 years younger than me but she stole my heart and kept life there very bearable during those 'island fever' moments. The best have stepped foot on Kwaj and lived it. Drop me a note. I now live in Fremont, California.

1962-63 Touchet, Neil  ntouchet@epix.net.  I was a Kwaj kid.  My father, ALbert Touchet, was an RCA employee from Moorestown, on the TRADEX Program.  We moved to Kwaj from Barrington, NJ.  After we left Kwaj he was assigned to the Atlantic Missle Range on a radar tracking ship for for both the Mercury Program and other government projects.  He used to grumble about the daily flights up to and back from Roi in a DC3.  He wasn't wild about flying.  We came to Kwaj on a L-1049 Lockheed Super Constellation from Hawaii with a fuel stop at Midway.  It was a long flight.  They had not extended the runway at this time and that was the biggest thing that could land on Kwaj.  I remember the Navy PBY's using JATO bottles to get off of the island.  They dropped the expended canisters over the ocean and we used to collect them diving where we weren't supposed to be.  We had a U2 land on the island and since it was still classified for viewing at that time they covered it with tarps and put a 24-hour guard around it.  I don't recall how it got off the island.  Although I was still in elementary school, my friend Alex and I used to hang out with the laborers and the natives at the Enlisted Club.  They were much more colorful than the folks at the O-Club.  It was really a great experience for a kid.  I still have a copy of the 1962 EKATAK yearbook.  I grew up in Apopka, Florida where my folks bought and ran a motel in their retirement.  I went to Florida Southern College, then followed Al's footsteps with a career in the Army.  My father passed away in Memphis, TN on November 1980 at age 72.  I retired from the Army in 1992 from the Pentagon.  My wife and I moved to the Harrisburg, PA area in 1995 and where we are now.  I kind of semi-retired as I still work as an Information Technology consultant.
1989-91 Tracy, Gary  I worked on the police department for 3 yrs, gltracy76541@yahoo.com.
1969-72 Tromley, Tim  Freehold, New Jersey, kwajmi@aol.com.  I was on Kwaj as dependent of a Bell Laboratories employee.  I was 15 yrs. old at the time, but enjoyed scuba diving, skiing, swimming, hangin' out at the marina's control tower, and jawin' with Earl Pelecka (police officer on pier), working at the Small Boat Marina on weekends, as part of KHS' work/study program.  Mike O'Brien, the marina's then mgr. (anyone heard from Mike @ all??) was a never ending source of help and guidance and most of all a friend during my teenage years on Kwaj!  My 3 years on Kwaj are probably *still* the best times in my life to-date! have been working for AT&T/Lucent Technologies in New Jersey for the past 19 years in computer & network support.  Cheers!!
1999-? Troutman, Tom  Left Kwaj May 1999--back April '01. Just found the site and looked and decided to say "Hi". I don't sign many at all, but have been thinking about you at times and all the music that you did at the Vets Hall and knowing how much people miss it. It sure would be nice to walk in there and hear the piano playing and everybody throwing back the Jose and beer, tomrtroutman@hotmail.com.

Vento, Steve  camera.gif (1155 bytes)  steve@ventophotography.com, Olympia, WA, Vento Photography website - http://www.ventophotography.com.  I was working for TCT Sept 1959 in the Special Service Dept as a Lifeguard. I later was transferred to the Hourglass Print Shop and later to manage the Boat Pool. The boats at the time were at best could just barely float let alone be used for any safe boating. I bought a 13’ G3 Glasspar with a 75 HP motor. Water Skiing and Scuba diving was our main outlet of recreation.  I also did a little over time working unloading supply ships as most of us did looking the extra money. I was approached by a very big man at the dock and he told me to grab a fork lift and head out to some obscure building and wait for a truck and unload it. This mans name was Timmis (not sure of spelling).  After having a problem with unloading some of the equipment he came by to check on why the truck was being held up. I got a crash course in driving a fork lift. Hence my first lesson with heavy equipment.  My contract was completed and returned to Hawaii working at a number of jobs one of which was Barry’s Union service in Kahala. At the same time, I was becoming involved with the crew who were training dolphins for the future Sea Life Park at Makapu.  I moved to Washington to go college and one thing lead to another I just never found my way back home.  In 1969 I hired on with Global Assoc and was supposed to take over the Global Assoc. auto maintenance shop. Once there, things changed so I became a laborer. In short order I was reassigned as a rigger on a crane based on Meck Island. In no time I made many friends mostly local boys from Hawaii. As it was we would rotate on and off Meck every three months. I ended up as a rigger /helper and finally as a Mechanic in the Heavy Equipment Repair shop. During these times I got to know Bear and German. They sized me up and knew I knew nothing about rigging and working around heavy equipment. My brother was on island with his family working as the dentist. (Nicknamed “Jawbreaker”) As it turned out my family doctor from Washington signed on as one of the island physicians, Dr James Carter. During this time I hung out with Kaliani (Leroy) Kealoha of which, he was an excellent guitar player and singer. Harry Kaihiki was also one of the top island entertainers at the time and spent many hours enjoying the company of such great talent and all around good guys.  As you would guess time has taken its toll on my memory and names have just faded away. However I have a nice collection of photographs I want to share, again the names are gone but not the memories of good people and good times. Among the many activities on the island was the darkroom and to be sure Macys unlimited supply of good camera gear. I can still remember fondly making the round of Macys looking to see what the hot items were for the week. Dr. James Carter showed me how to process film and create images. As a result of this hobby, when I returned to the mainland I banged around from a number of lame jobs and in 1974 I decided I should returned to college to get a degree in photography. As a result I have worked full time as a commercial photographer for the past 41 years. So, life on Kwaj wasn't all bad, my time there launched me in to a new career.

Wayland, Alan and my wife's name is Fran, alanfran@academicplanet.com.  I worked in telecommunications at that time. I am now a systems analyst and my 21 year old daughter is going to Texas A&M. Y'all we is getting old - I mean the Kwaj people that were there during the 1970's.
1982-85 Wallace, Dan "Diver" One of the founding fathers of the infamous Junk Heaps. Global Associates Engineman in Marine Dept (Sprint, Spartan, and Tarlang) and Marine Tower Control. Married Jo Slack in 1989. Two daughters (Stacey & Shelley) and two grandsons (Ocean and Jordan). Living in Radnor, Ohio; the action capitol of the universe. We both work at a nearby amusement park. Jo is in charge of booking talent and it is my responsibility to refill all the toilet paper dispensers. We will soon be opening our on-line boutique, "The Hip Hippo." Clothing not just for the full-figured but for the grotesque blubber-butts as well. Life has been good to us since our prison wedding and thankfully the IRS has yet to track us down. I must admit that I miss the bad-old-days on Kwaj. The gaiety of the Emon beach body-slamming competition; hammering upside-down tequila shooters at the bachelors pool and then beating the dog-snot out of the Kwaj Cops in softball; adventure sailing with the Cal 20 banditos; riding our bikes across the reef to big Buster and barely making it back with flat tires as the tide came in; Zodiac surfing the big waves in the pass; partying in the heart of Typhoon Pam; the shark pit snorkeling and the arm pit sniffing. Look for us in an upcoming starring role of "Cops-the wild chases that got away!"  dw40@columbus.rr.com

1989-91 Whitley, Carlos C. & Bonnie J.  After our four year tour of duty in Hawaii we felt we still had not found "Paridise". A good friend of ours was the Marine Evaluator for USAKA and talked us into replacing him when his tour was up. It was the best two years and we loved it. We would have stayed, but the Army found us and made us return to Virginia. The Edingers replaced us. Bonnie worked with Pan Am and then Johnson Control on Meck Island for Louie Rowe. Really miss that ride on the Jelang K and Jera. Our daughter traveled with us and met her future husband, Tim Mow. We gave them an engagement party at Emon Beach and your band played. Christine Whitley and Tim Mow were married in Hawaii a couple of weeks before our return to the mainland. They now have two beautiful boys ages 7 and 4. Carlos is now retired from the Army and is a Lt. with the Homerville Police Department. Bonnie is the Production Manager at the local newspaper, The Clinch County News. Christine is a Nurse and Tim is also a Police Officer working for Carlos. We all live in Homerville, Ga., a small town up the road from the famed Okefenokee Swamp. Our son, who visited from Hawaii several times, now lives in Ponchatoula, LA where he and his wife Pilar are working on master degrees and awaiting the arrival of their baby. We remember fondly our time on Kwaj and miss the late afternoon kite flying, scuba diving and fishing with the Hawley's on the Minnow, reefing, movies at the Richardson and the great parties at the Marine Department and Yuk Club. Thanks to our time on Kwaj we have a pretty good shell collection which we visit the schools with and talk with children about the ocean, shells, and scuba diving. We are truly blessed to have been a part of the Kwaj history. Carlos's e-mail is

1990-95 Williams, Ted  I was an Elementary Principal at George Seitz then Superintendent of the Kwajalein School System. I left when my wife contracted Cancer; thinking she had whipped the big C, we returned to the states then, months later it returned in form of bone cancer and after a valiant fight of three years she lost the battle. I have since remarried and my wife Pam enjoys hearing my island stories. We love to travel and have been to Germany and that region twice and are planning a trip to the islands in the next couple of years. We visited Lance and Barbara Hooker there; they worked on Kwaj and she taught at the high school. I work in the Granite School District in Salt Lake City, Utah and at age 71 am an elementary principal at Lake Ridge Elementary School. Between my wife and I we have 5 sons and have 10 grandkids. Three of our sons and families live here, her oldest son (career Army) is stationed in Germany and my oldest son Ted Jr. works for Intel in Phoenix, Az. My total career in Granite District has been 16 years which I interrupted to come to Kwaj. It was one of the high lights of my career in education. I have great memories of Kwaj and when I visit your web site, I enjoy being transported back in time -- I go to the site from time to time to look. While on Kwaj I worked first for Johnson Controls then Raytheon. I am still working because I still enjoy helping kids. Would be interested in hearing from friends on Kwaj when I was there. I am in touch with a few. Thank you for your work to help people maintain connections of Kwaj and the people in their lives while there. Sincerely, Ted Williams, email: teepeewilliams1@msn.com.

1993-05 Woods, Diana  mailto:Ishoponline2save@gmail.com, San Antonio, Texas 78260, (210) 367-3131, I got married in June of 1993 and moved to Roi-Namur in August to be with my husband, Joe Woods. He ran the Roi-Namur Power Plant. My job was the MIT Travel Secretary for years until the office moved to Kwajalein. Sometime around 1999, I flew back and forth to the MIT office. I never tired of the beauty of the islands as we flew day in and day out. With the one exception, when the left engine failed on the way to Kwaj. For a minute or two, we were going face down. Fortunately, the pilots are the best in the world. That plane flew with one engine for quite some time. As it turned out, we landed beautifully. Thank you guys!  Life was the best on these precious islands. I was surrounded by the most wonderful people from so many different places and backgrounds. Now I am a Leisure Travel Consultant and am still meeting people on the beaches of the world. How awesome is that. Thank you Lord for your many blessings!

1987-94 Young, Curtis  Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany, Chief, AFN-E - Regional Engineering Activity.  I first landed on Kwajalein in November of 1987 after the company I worked for in New Mexico had just won the sub-contract for the technical services portion of the KMC mission. As I was told at the time all the current employees were holding out for better pay and not signing up for the contract so DynCorp needed a group of the New Mexico team to do a 30 day TDY as a show of force to convince the current employees to sign up. Well, needless to say that was a strange 30 days and we all felt like NFL scabs but I guess it worked. I was offered a lead technician job in Optics as well as the island TV repair shop if I would come back so I packed up my family and away we went. I spent the first three years working in Optics before I switched jobs and took over the Radio/TV station maintenance position. Those first three years I worked so much holding down two jobs that I hadn't taken time to enjoy the island so when I went to work at the Radio/TV station I gave up the tv repair shop to Shermie and took up diving. After two years at the TV station I was ready to get off the island and entered Civil Service working for AFRTS in Seoul Korea. I left Korea in August of 1994 and moved to Tokyo Japan but still with AFRTS. We really enjoyed our time in Japan but after 6 years in one place it was time to move again, this time to Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany where we have been since. I currently lead the contingency operations for our deployed mission in Afghanistan and over the last 12 years have been in most countries ending in ..stan as well as every Palace that Sadam Husain built in Iraq. This August I will reach my 20th year with AFRTS and now that all my kids are grown and either on their own or in college Teresa and I are free to do whatever we want to but for the near future we continue to enjoy Germany and I still have all those kids college bills to pay. My personal email is hogdogs2@gmail.com and can be found on Facebook under the name Curtis (T-Bone) Young. I truly miss the quiet island life of Kwajalein.

Zeigler, Lew Moon Bay, CA, LewisZeiglerusmc@gmail.com. I was a former Kwaj Capt. (pilot) of the DC-4's Caribou's and Electra's. In addition to the flying I was a member of KCT and appeared in a few productions as well as being the emcee for many of them. After we left Kwaj. we moved to KY for 4 years before the FAA called and wanted to know if I wanted to go back to work. I joined them in Jan 1986 as an Air Carrier Operations Inspector and worked for the FAA for over 19 years until I was forced to retire due to losing my voice box due to cancer. During that time I spent 7 years based in Frankfurt, Germany where we got to see almost all of Europe, North Africa and the middle east. The maximum allowed time overseas was 7 years so after that we returned to San Francisco where I worked in the FAA San Francisco International Field Office until I retired in 2005. My wife, Anne passed away after a fall in 2003. I still live in Half Moon Bay, CA. I turned 82 years old in April and have an assortment of medical issues but I am surviving, as they say.
