Bomb threat leads to HS evacuation   Published: Friday, September 28, 2007 9:40 AM

Students at Washington High School were required to evacuate the school after a bomb threat was called in Thursday morning.

The Kansas City, Kan., Police Department responded to the call shortly after 9 a.m. Later on, a suspicious package was found outside of the building, located at 7340 Leavenworth Road, by a school resource officer after an order to sweep the area was given by officers.

The KCK Police Departmentís EOD Unit was called in to investigate the package. The unit determined that there was nothing dangerous inside, but still the unit took the package away and later blew it up. The exact contents of the package were not released.

Students - who had been moved to a nearby athletic field at the school - returned to class at about 11:30 a.m. after police cleared the scene.

The Kansas City, Kan., Public Schools District released a statement informing parents about the situation and informed them that they did not need to pick up their children.

No one was injured because of the incident, which is still under investigation.

With the threat at Washington, facilities in all four school districts in the county have experienced security threats in the past several months. Last spring, Piper High School, Turner High School and Bonner Springs High School all experienced a threat of some kind. Bishop Ward High School also caught a student bringing a toy gun to school.
